When the surrounding extractive industries threaten their ancestral forest, the Punan Adiu Indigenous Community in Indonesia successfully protected their land through participatory mapping and forest registration. In 2017, after many long years of deliberation and endless negotiation, the Malinau District Government granted a legal decree on recognition and protection of 17.415 hectares of the Adiu’s community land.

Together with COSATT, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Media Programme Asia published the book “South Asian Print Media Crisis - Viewpoints from Seven Countries” this year.
The book offers an overview of the print media crisis in most South Asian countries during and after the pandemic. ...The readers were unable to access newspapers and also not willing to get into physical contact with paper, as many feared that contact with the material could spread the Covid-19 virus. Apart from the already growing migration from offline to online media, the pandemic has futher increased the usage of online media in South Asian countries. Which effects did this have on news outlets and media productions? The book explores the issue on various case studies and analyses in regards to #Bangladesh, #Bhutan, #India, #Maldives, #Nepal, #Pakistan and #SriLanka.

The fellows of the Adenauer Fellowship during the Adenauer Media Leaders Academy 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The second part of the Adenauer Media Leaders Academy 2024 focussed on visual literacy, among the many AI-topics that we are surrounded by this year, as well as group and team ...building activities outside of the event venue.
The session conduced by Alec Corpuz was about visual literacy and generative AI in visual journalism. It tackled on the role of images in effective storytelling and how bias, conscious or otherwise, affects how images are framed. The session also touched on generative AI use in the context of visual journalism and its effects on documenting stories.
The last part of the event focussed on culture-centric group activities which the participants were able to conduct themselves as well a a visit to the Petronas Twin Towers.
We thank all our participating fellows for their commitment to us and their active engagement with KAS as well as our magazine ArtIQulte, which is currently in the making for its 5th edition! We hope to see you next year again during out events!

The Adenauer Media Leaders Academy took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from the 15th to the 18th of October this year.
This year, we were able to welcome 40 fellows from various countries such as Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, ...and the Philippines in Malaysia 🇲🇾
For the first time, we conducted a full-day workshop and focussed on the use of AI in the newsroom. The workshop started with establishing a basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence and its evolution into the tools and resources being adopted in newsrooms today. We also discussed the ethics of using AI tools and then ultimately worked on some common use-cases of AI tools in content creation. For the practical component, the participants used various tools to research, analyse and process information to draft a news story for two different mediums.
The day ended with a dinner buffet in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s central business district. Despite the heavy rain, many participants were able to explore the city!
